Landrover Adventure en 4×4 Discovery Travel
Landrover maakt hem niet meer. Maar bij Landrover Adventure kun je hem huren: de Defender, de enige werkelijk iconische auto. De Defender is stoer en aaibaar tegelijk. Het is dé auto waaraan iedereen denkt bij rijden over moeilijk begaanbare paden, over bergen, door de woestijn of het oerwoud. Het is dé auto voor het maken van de reizen die 4×4 Discovery Travel aanbiedt.
Wij zijn gelukkig dat we samenwerken met Landrover Adventure. Als je met ons een avontuur wilt beleven en je hebt zelf geen 4×4, dan regelen we graag een geschikte Defender voor je bij Landrover Adventure. Ze hebben ze in alle smaken: de kleine 90, goed voor twee personen; de fraaie 110, zowel in 2-persoons als 5-persoons uitvoering.
De auto’s worden prima onderhouden door zusterbedrijf Berwin, al jarenlang een betrouwbare Landrover specialist. En ze zijn voorzien van alles dat je onderweg nodig hebt voor het maken van thee, koffie en de lunch. Ook een complete kampeeruitrusting, met daktent en al, behoort tot de mogelijkheden.
Van half mei tot half juni 2018 gaat 4×4 Discovery Travel een reis door Europa maken met 11 Australiërs. Hiervoor maken we gebruik van vijf Defenders van Landrover Huren. Volg de posts op onze website of onze Facebook pagina voor verslagen van dit prachtige avontuur.
Avontuur in Noord Portugal
Wim en Nelly over hun reis met ons in Noord Portugal in 2017.
Wij kijken met veel genoegen terug op onze reis met jullie door Noord Portugal. Het was ongelofelijk mooi. We hebben het geluk gehad op een avontuur mee te gaan dat onze verwachtingen ver heeft overtroffen. We hebben genoten van de mooie en uitdagende wegen. Iedere dag was er iets nieuws. Zeer afwisselend!
Bovenal het gezelschap en de sfeer, de route door een wonderschoon landschap en de stukken off-road met precies de juiste moeilijkheidsgraad vormen een mooie en onvergetelijke herinnering.
Evenzo verrassend waren de telkens weer mooie plekken om te overnachten. Het was een off-road reis van klasse en dat hebben we zeer gewaardeerd.
We vinden dat jullie de reis zeer goed hebben samengesteld.

Acht dagen Noord en Centraal Portugal
De ervaringen van Helmut en Justine.
De heenreis van twee dagen door Frankrijk en Spanje was al een klein avontuur. In Braganza, de startplaats van de tocht, wachtte ons de eerste positieve verrassing: het hotel (Moinho da Ponte Velha) is prachtig gelegen.
De tour begint op eenvoudig te berijden off-road weggetjes en wordt langzaamaan zwaarder naarmate we vorderen. Alle hotels zijn uitstekend uitgekozen; de mensen zijn zeer vriendelijk en de ontvangst was altijd hartelijk; het eten was wonderbaarlijk lekker. De sfeer gedurende de hele tocht was ontspannen: ondanks het rijden voelden we ons onmiddellijk op vakantie. Vooral de mengeling tussen het fraaie rijden gedurende de dag en de ontspannen avonden met de lokale cultuur, evenals onze beide geweldige gidsen, hebben deze vakantie tot iets heel bijzonders gemaakt.

Discovering the unexpected
In November 2016 we did our first roaming tour of Morocco: 14 days of which only the first four were planned. For the remaining 10 days we had a number of things we wanted to see, without a fixed itinerary or planned overnight stays. Our clients had said they wanted to learn how Moroccans live; they wanted to drive through the desert and sand dunes, while the Atlas mountains were also very attractive.
Tetouan
We spent the first of our four planned days in Tetouan, a nice place with an unspoilt medina, as yet not much discovered by tourists. We were in a beautiful hotel, El Reducto, a riad in a tiny ally right in the centre of town, with a wonderful atmosphere.
Its terrace offers great views over the town and the Rif mountains in the background.
Like every old town in Morocco, Tetouan has got a medina, a maze of alleys with small shops, craftsmen, traders in livestock, mosques, bath houses – and lots of people.
At the edge of the medina there is a tannery which, though a lot smaller than the famous one in Fes, is interesting because you can walk into it and come up close, making you realise how hard the work in such places is.
Chefchaouen
From Tetouan we went on to Chefchaouen, very different in atmosphere. This has been discovered by tourists – its maze of allies painted in attractive blue and white, its prosperous looks making you feel not too guilty about your own prosperity, its manageable size all combine to make the tourist feel comfortable. Chefchaouen is truly worth a visit, especially if you go outside the tourist season as we do and if you stay in the wonderful hotel Alkhalifa, where the sheep stand right next to your window and you have a perfect view over the town.
You cannot but fall for the charm of Chefchaouen.
Volubilis
After picturesque Chefchaouen, we headed in the direction of Volubilis. We took a track through the mountains, where hardly a foreign vehicle comes, so were much stared at by the locals, who were clearly wondering what on earth brought us there. We had lunch between the marihuana plants.
Volubilis is the site of the most southern town of the Roman empire. At this time of day the light was beautiful. We parked near the ruins, went through a hole in the fence and just wandered around until a guard came up to us saying we still had to pay our entrance fee. Which we duly handed over and for which we were rewarded with a guided tour. We paid him a little extra, of course, because that’s the way things work in Morocco.
Meknes
We drove on to Meknes, the smallest of the four Imperial Cities. Here we stayed in another wonderful hotel, the Riad Lahboul, comfortable, hospitable, excellent breakfast.
Meknes is very lively, with an attractive medina and a great many interesting building. This is not in the least thanks to Moulay Idriss, who, to his own greater glory, erected a vast palace, gateways into the city and the central square. The square is called The Square of Destruction because it was filled with the rubble of the houses he had torn down to make room for his palace.
Plain of Rekham
After all this high culture, it was time to head into the country. We decided to go east to Debdou and then south, across the Plain of Rekham to Boudnib. The road to Debdou was on tarmac and not terribly interesting. Just beyond this little town, however, we climbed on top of the plain, at an altitude of about 1400 meters, where the tarmac changed into a track. As it was getting dark, we set up camp a few hundred meters from the main road, with fantastic views over the area around us.
The next day we drove south over the plain. This is the Moroccan desert.
We camped once more in the wild in a dry river bed.
The next day we reached the campsite near Boudnib, run by a French couple. It is excellent!
To Erg Chebbi
The road to Erg Chebbi from Boudnib is beautiful. We pass an oasis, a little stream and, as we get further south, sand is slowly taking over the rocky desert.
The dunes of Erg Chebbi are famous. They conform completely to our cliché picture of the Sahara Desert: sand wherever you look. The light in the morning and evening is beautiful. It’s fun to drive through, though not without risk. You get stuck easily and going over the edge of a dune can be a hairy experience: if you haven’t done a reccce first (most people haven’t), you don’t know what’s at the other side and may be in for quite a surprise. The best thing to do is to hire a local guide who rides in front of you on his moped. And have a swim afterwards in our comfortable hotel.
Tinghir
Tinghir is a small town at the south side of the High Atlas Mountains. It is notable for its large oasis with palm trees, figs, pomegranates and olives. The old clay town is charming and well worth a visit.
From Tinghir the road leads north into the Gorge du Todra into the High Atlas.

From the Gorge du Todra to the Gorge des Dades
There is a fantastic track leading from the Gorge du Todra to the more famous Gorge des Dades. Starting just north of Tamtatouchte, it leads over a mountain ridge down into a valley with a dry river bed. At first the going is easy, with great views, and then suddenly the track stops. You have to drive into the river bed and find your way. Interesting!
Gorge des Dades and Imilchil
We stayed overnight in a M’Semrir, in Hotel Aït, where we were treated to Moroccan hospitality.
The next day we set off for Imilchil, north through the Dades Valley.
We were lucky to be travelling on a Thursday, when there is a lively soukh in Iznaguen, a village some 30 kms north of M’Semrir. Here the production cycle from live animal to meat on the counter is a matter of minutes and a few hundred meters.
Towards sunset we reached the two lakes near Imilchil, Tislite and Isli (bride and bridgroom). The origin of these lakes goes back to the time when a girl from the Aït-Yassa tribe was not allowed to marry a boy from the AÏt-Brahims. The two lovers cried so hard, that the two lakes formed in the mountains. The beauty of their love shines through in the beauty of these lakes.
Imilchil lies at an altitude of 2120 mtr. It is often cold and today was no exception. We stayed in a hotel as the only guests. In the morning you could see the frost over the fields.
On our last day before we headed back to Tanger Med, we had breakfast near the lake and via a short track across the Middle Atlas Mountains reached the motorway for Casablanca.
In Bishkek stonden wij na aankomst al buiten de luchthaven, toen een van ons ontdekte dat ze haar jas niet bij zich had. Ai. Hing waarschijnlijk op een stoel bij de bagageband. Op Schiphol zou je dan een megaprobleem hebben: hoe kom je daar? De bagagehal terug in lopen is onmogelijk. In Bishkek niet. Je wacht even tot er iemand door de geopende deur komt, slipt naar binnen, pakt je jas en gaat weer naar buiten. Kraait geen haan naar.
Dit tekent Kirgistan. Het is nog niet zo ver geklommen op de alles is geregeld ladder. Dit is een van de grote charmes van dit land – niet alleen omdat je je jas lekker snel terug hebt. Als reiziger kun je nog genieten van ongereptheid, van de vrijheid die het ongeregelde met zich meebrengt. Er zijn ook niet zo veel reizigers: zo’n 1,5 miljoen per jaar, waarvan 75% in het gebied rond meer Issyk-Kul blijft hangen. Dat betekent dat je de rest van het land ongeveer voor jezelf hebt, zeker als je het in juni of september bezoekt.
Wat je dan ziet en ervaart, is in foto’s en woorden slechts te benaderen. Het gevoel van vrijheid, ruimte, frisse lucht, sprankelend water, totale stilte kun je alleen maar beleven als je er zelf bent. Laat je inspireren door de foto’s hieronder en ga met ons mee op een van onze tochten door dit wonderschone, vriendelijke land.

Frank, one of the participants on our trip through North and Central Portugal, told us afterwards. Others, too, were enthusiastic:

Hi Mark
I was just reflecting on what a fantastic adventure we had in Portugal. It combined amazing scenery, good company, lovely accommodation and food, and really learning how to drive a 4×4 off road. We did things I never thought the car could achieve, but it seemed so effortless.
My Discovery 4 was put through its paces and returned covered in dust and what seemed to be “battle scars” but after a professional clean (and a new air filter!) there isn’t a mark left on it! What an amazing car it is! I have new respect for it now.
Thanks to you and Hans once again and very best wishes for the success of 4×4 Discovery Travel. You certainly deserve it.

Among the many things that people who have never been on a tour with us want to know, two questions stand out:
- What do we need to do to prepare our car?
- What is the risk of damage to our car?
These are sensible questions.
Our answers are: very little and very little.
For the car the following is essential:
- Make sure it’s been serviced and is in good overall working order.
- Have a set of good all-terrain tires (five of them), with plenty of thread left.
If you do want to make changes to your car, fitting some under-body protection, especially for the differentials,is a good idea. A snorkel is nice especially in dusty areas.
And that’s it. Less is more.
Just don’t do as the locals do:
You may ask yourself if your car is in good working order and ready for the journey. If you have any doubts, mention them to us.
The routes we drive are non-damaging to your car: it is in nobody’s interest to take the risk of not being able to continue the journey. The worst that can happen is some scratches on the paintwork from overhanging branches on narrow lanes. If the foliage becomes very dense, we cut some of it away.
Whenever the track becomes technical, we get out, help and guide you. As long as you follow our guidance and have reasonable off-road driving skills, very little can happen.
Rijden volgens de Groene Code
Een voordeel van een 4×4-voertuig is de mogelijkheid om op plekken te komen die voor anderen moeilijk te bereiken zijn. Als we dit ook in de toekomst willen doen, moeten we zo voorzichtig mogelijk omgaan met natuur en milieu. Dit kan door ons als 4×4-rijders aan een aantal regels te houden en anderen daarop te attenderen. Realiseer je dat 4×4 rijden op veel plaatsen een recht is, waar we erg zuinig op moeten zijn.
Tijdens onze reizen passeren we nog wel eens paden die er interessant uit zien. Helaas staat er soms een bord dat ons verbiedt erin te rijden. Ook al is het verleidelijk dat te doen, en is de pakkans zeer klein, we zijn sterk en doen het niet. Dit vergroot de kans dat we kunnen blijven doen wat we zo leuk vinden.
Groene Code op onverharde wegen
- We rijden waar dit is toegestaan
- We maken uitsluitend gebruik van bestaande routes, openbaar toegankelijk voor gemotoriseerd verkeer
- We hebben ons vooraf georiënteerd (via landkaarten en/of informatie) op routes waar 4×4-rijden toegestaan en mogelijk is
- We wijken niet af van bestaande routes en gaan geen eigen routes creëren; onze sporen zullen weer door anderen worden gevolgd waardoor onnodige schade aan de natuur wordt toegebracht
- We respecteren natuur en milieu
- We schenken extra aandacht aan wild met jongen
- We voorkomen schade aan jonge aanwas (bomen en planten)
- Let op brandgevaar
- Laat geen vuil of afval achter in de natuur
- Zorg dat je auto vrij is van olie- en vetresten
- Zorg bij reparaties in het veld voor een vloeistofdichte ondergrond
- Respecteer de rechten van derden
- Open geen hekken e.d. die kennelijk tot doel hebben om passanten te weren; hekken bedoeld om vee tegen te houden, sluiten we achter ons als ze dicht waren
- Respecteer verkeersregels, verkeersborden, verkeerstekens en andere weggebruikers – juist door het niet opvolgen van de basis verkeersregels ontstaan vaak irritaties van andere weggebruikers
- Geef geen aanleiding tot overlast voor fietsers, wandelaars, ruiters, boeren en bewoners van de streek waar je bent, geef waar nodig deze mensen extra ruimte en/of verminder snelheid
- Pas je snelheid aan, voorkom onnodige stofwolken, opspattend water en/of modder
- Veroorzaak geen hinder (o.a. geluidshinder) voor anderen.
- Een vriendelijke groet tijdens het passeren doet goed
