On-road: the N2, Route 66 of Portugal

The longest road in Europe

There are many roads and lanes going through Portugal that stun you with their beautiful views, showing the diversity that Portugal has to offer. However, there’s one that stands out: the N2. With its length of 739,26 kms it is the longest single road in Europe and the third longest in the world.

The N2 runs north-south like a spine through the middle of the country. It starts in the north in Chaves, a town going back to Roman times, and ends in Faro on the Mediterranean.

The road officially got its N2 number on May 11, 1945 and at the time consisted of a series of connected smaller and larger roads. Some of these dated back to the Middle Ages and even to the days of the Roman Empire. Long stretches were unpaved or consisted of macadam, a technique developed by Scottish engineer John Loudon McAdam in which two layers of gravel were rolled on a basis of rock to create a relatively smooth surface. The English word tarmac derives from this: instead of gravel you use tar.

Obviously the current road differs here and there from the original of 1945, but not much has changed. It still goes through many of the same districts, counties, towns and villages as it did back then. The pace of life is slow here and so is the speed at which you drive. In this way you can fully enjoy the culture and nature that Portuigal has got to offer. Be surprised.

Culture and nature

Right at the start you find a cultural highlight: Chaves, an old town where it is a joy to stay. Take a stroll, have a look at the Roman bridge and visit the castle.

In the northern part you drive along a mountain range through a barren landscape, empty and with endless views.

The river Douro dominates the middle part. The valley that the river has created, is one of the oldest wine regions of Europe. Its terraces on which the vines grow are typical for the area. It is beautiful and fully justifies its designation as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The road leads past villages beautifully set in the mountains, where the houses have been constructed of granite walls and slate roofs. Some of them are 900 years old. Rarely do you get such a strong feeling that time has stopped.

South of the River Tagus we arrive in a totally different setting. Rolling hills filled with olive and cork groves characterise the Alentejo. Finally we get to the Ãlgarve, looking completely different from what you know from the brochures of travel agents. Here you find mountains, nature, solitude. At the end of the journey we reach the Mediterranean. More touristy, of course, but still, look around carefully, walk to the harbour and observe the fishermen. You will find that here, too, you can taste life in Portugal.

Drive the N2

To enjoy the scenery, the road, the towns and villages to the full, we tsake fove days to go from the northern tip of the N2 to its finish in the South. Furthermore, this gives us time to meet the local people, enjoy the cuisine and excellent wines.

We start with a day in Chaves so that you have a relaxed start of the journey on the day after. Once in Faro we spend a day on the coast to rest, reflect on the journey behind us and let it all sink in.

For groups we offer this trip with a local, highly knowledgeable guide. José Almeida, our Dream Overland partner in Portugal, is passionate about his country, its traditions and culture. He has contributed all his expertise, knowledge and love of Portugal to create this e-roadbook. We show you hidden villages, excellent restaurants, great hotels, gorgeous towns, scenery you would not want to miss.

Highlights

  • Individual journey starting in Lisbon, then going through Alentejo and Algarve to give you a wonderful taste of Southern Portugal.
  • Ten days to cover everything we have described.
  • All accommodations included.
  • Rental car included for six days.
  • E-roadbook acting as a virtual tour guide.
  • Lots of points of interest and restaurants.
  • Clean & Safe certified accommodations.

Lisbon

Your holiday starts in Lisbon, one of the few European capitals with both a river and a coastline. The sea and climate that give Lisbon its peculiar energy. It is a lively city boasting many important Manueline monuments from the 16th century such as the Torre de Belém and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. In contrast to this it has the picturesque mediaeval quarters of Alfama and Mouraria, above which stands the castle of St. George. This castle, matched by Bairro Alto on the other hill, leads down to the downtown city centre known as the “Baixa pombalina”.

Your roadbook contains a map with all the highlights, a selection of excellent restaurants and a suggested walk to lap it all up. You stay in a comfortable hotel in the city centre for three nights.

In the morning of your fourth day, you pick up your car at the airport and drive into the Alentejo.

Exploring the Alentejo

South of the River Tagus is the Alentejo, Portugal’s largest region, known for its endless plains peppered by cork and olive trees. The landscapes of the Alentejo are something to die for, together with the little villages and towns with their Moorish and medieval castles.

Small villages and historic towns show the big influence the Arabs had in the whole south of the country during their occupation for nearly five centuries until the late 1400s. This is the region where you’ll feel closest to northern Africa, just by looking at the landscape, the architecture, tasting the food or even getting to know some of the traditions or listening to the traditional music.

There’s also a huge number of walking routes if you want to go for a hike, and enjoy the wonderful landscapes, either inland or along the coast. If you like to taste a good wine, the Alentejo is home to some of the best wines in Portugal.

We have created an interesting route from Lisbon to the Alentejo and two beautiful round trip in the Evora area. Both take you to the most interesting places through fascinating scenery and a selection of great places to eat. You stay in an agriturismo or comfortable bed & breakfast for three nights.

Exploring the Algarve

The Algarve region is famous for its fantastic coastline, beaches, golden cliffs, virtually deserted islands and small coves sheltered by the rocks. The ocean, in every shade of blue and mostly calm and warm, invites you for swims and water sports.

Perhaps lesser known is that in the 15th century the Portuguese set off on journeys that led them to discover other peoples and cultures. Cities such as Silves preserve traces of its Arab past and Lagos from the time of the Discoveries. Portimão and Albufeira are bustling towns by night and day. Tavira is a showcase for traditional architecture and Faro, the gateway to the region, deserves a long stop to discover its beautiful historic centre.

And there are the mountains, where people live in harmony with nature and maintain traditions that they love to share.

We have developed a lovely itinerary from Alentejo to Algarve and two round trips in the Algarve, giving you much more than the traditional pictures of sun and sea. You stay in an attractive hotel either in or near Faro or Albufeira for two nights.

Everything organised

We take care of the organisation and bookings. The only thing we cannot do is book your flights. Our service includes:

  • Rental car for six days, comprehensive insurance.

The Penedès region

Penedès is located in the south of Catalonia, between the pre-coastal mountain range (Serralada Pre-litoral) and the Mediterranean. It is a wine-producing region, framed by the coastal hills of the Serra del Garraf and the higher inland mountains which skirt the Catalan Central Depression. Long considered one of the country’s best wine-producing regions after the Rioja area, it is also one of the most ancient viticultural areas in Europe. Perhaps best known for its Cava production, a sparkling wine which has had its own Denominació d’Origen since 1991. White grape varieties predominate, although the region also produces some highly regarded, oak-aged reds.

The climate is mild and sunny.

The minimum number of participants is four (two cars), the maximum 10 (five cars), making it a perfect outing for a group of friends who like to do something different and exciting. Working together to conquer obstacles, the feeling that you have overcome a challenge, combined with picknick lunches, great food and a drink afterwards combine to create an atmosphere of camaraderie that will stay with you for a long time.

Safety first

4×4 driving needs to be safe. That’s why we train you first before we go out into the wild. All the time Carles will be there to guarantee a safe adventure for everyone.

Vehicles

The vehicles we provide are Nissan Patrols modified to perfection. The cars have been raised and are equipped with a very sort short range low gear box to make maximum use of the torque of the engine. These are very reliable cars, perfectly suitable for the kind of tracks we drive on these tours.

Gastronomy

Catalonia is a gastronomical heaven. Its climate and the care people put in preparing the food provide an intense taste to fish, meat, vegetables and fruits. In recent years traditional cooking has been infused with innovative combinations of flavours and sophisticated recipes, further improving the gastronomic experience.

You will enjoy these tastes with a barbecue and excellent  cooking in the restaurants we visit.

We design the trip in consultation with you so that it is fully geared towards your wishes. At the bottom of this page you find an example of what a tour could look like.

The Kyrgyz mountains are pure, unspoilt, offering fresh air and stunning views. They are peopled by nomads who welcome you to their yurts. Old traditions have been preserved. Different religious and political influences over the centuries have resulted in a culture and atmosphere that can only be described as mystical.

Example programme of a 9-day tour

The tenth day doesn’t count as a tour day, as you will only be transferred to the airport.

Day 1: Bishkek

We will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your hotel where you can refresh yourself. When you’re ready, you can do a short Bishkek tour with or without a guide to get acquainted with the city or just have a rest. Bishkek is a textbook example of Soviet city planning, with wide, straight roads and somewhat oversized buildings.

Overnight stay: hotel

Day 2: Bishkek – Son Kul

After breakfast you head for the one but largest lake in Kyrgyzstan: Son Kul. Surrounded by mountains at 3013 meters, this is the highest altitude lake of Kyrgyzstan. For centuries nomads have come here to rest and use the pastures for their cattle. You will see herds of sheep, goats, yaks, horses and the odd cow. You can have lunch here and have the entire afternoon to explore this wonderful area. Have a walk along the shores of the lake or go into the mountains.

Overnight stay in a yurt.

Day 3: Around Son Kul

This day is entirely yours. You can take a tour round the lake to meet nomads, discovering their way of life, traditions and culture. You can take a walk in the mountains. Or you drive across the 32 Parrots Pass , where at its bottom you can stop by a river and walk to a nice waterfall. Great place for a picnic.

Overnight stay in a yurt.

Day 4: Son Kul – Tash Rabat

You move on. Today takes you to the Tash Rabat Karavanserai on the Silk Road. This is a stone, castle-like construction dating back to the 14th century of which nobody really knows its purpose. It is unique. Tash Rabat lies at an altitude of 3200 meters in the middle of the Tian Shan mountain range. It hides a total of 31 chambers; its walls are a meter thick. A subterranean room was possible used as a prison. You will cross the 3000-meter-high Moldo Ashu pass, again of wondrous beauty.

Overnight stay in a yurt near Tash Rabat.

Day 5: Tash Rabat – Naryn

In Tash Rabat you can have an interesting hike or ride on horseback in the morning. Horse riding is a fantastic way to move through the mountains, just as the locals do. After lunch you drive through the mountains to Naryn, a town in the middle of a valley.

Overnight stay: guesthouse.

Day 6: Naryn – Kochkor – Tamga

Again a beautiful trip through the mountains. In the afternoon you arrive at Lake Issyk Kul, “the pearl of Central Asia”. It is a vast, somewhat saline lake at an altitude of 1608 meters. In spite of this and winter temperatures as low as -25° centigrade, it never freezes over. This is probably due to earth warmth and its slight saline water, but this phenomenon hasn’t been fully explained yet. Before dinner you can have a walk to the lake.

Overnight stay in a guesthouse.

Day 7: Tamga – Karakol

Today you go through the Jeti Oguz Valley. Jeti Oguz is famous for its red rock formations, called The Seven Bulls. You also pass the Mountains of the Broken Heart. Have a walk here. Drive on to Karakol, a pleasant town, where you can visit the Dungan mosque, built in Chinese style, completely in wood without using any nails. You can also visit an old wooden Orthodox church.

Overnight stay in a guesthouse.

Day 8: Karakol – Cholpon Ata

Drive along Lake Issyk Kul and come through the Semenovskoye and Grigorievskoye Valleys. These valleys twee valleys meet at the end. You drive in through one and out the other. You will see many yurts, can have a picnic in nature, enjoy the peace and quiet.

Overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 9: Issyk Kul Lake – Bishkek

You are back in the inhabited world and head for Bishkek. Visit a vast plain full of rocks and stones, many of which showing drawing going back to 800 BC. Make a detour to see the Burana Tower, a minaret from the 11th century. In the days of the Silk Toad it indicated there was town here. This has now completely disappeared. Next to the tower there is a field with so-called Balbans (stone warriors).

Back in Bishkek you can have a guided tour through the city if you wish, to get to know the town better than on your day of arrival. Visit Pobeda Square, Duboviy Park, Ala-Too Square, the building of the National Philharmonic Orchestra. Make sure to visit the fascinating bazar.

Overnight stay: hotel.

Dag 10: Transfer to airport

We will take care of your transfer to the airport.

Individual trip Andorra to Bossost

Discover the Spanish Pyrenees by yourself

Specially for individual travellers we have developed this version of our trip through the Pyrenees. It is longer than the group tour, you get our e-roadbook as your virtual tour guide and we book the hotels for you. The only thing you have to do is download the e-roadbook and go.

Mountain tracks are the norm for this tour. The route takes you to places you’d normally never get to; places you didn’t realise even existed in Europe. The variation in the landscapes you travel through is striking. No day is the same. You drive high up a mountain until over 2400 meters where it is crisply cold, barren and rocky. Depending on the time of year, you may negotiate some snow and then descend into a lush green valley, with meadows, cows, sheep and have lunch in the shade because in the sun it is too warm.

Beautiful scenery

Your tour starts in Andorra. You drive up the Cabus Pass on tarmac and down the famous Smuggler’s Route into Spain on a mud track. The transition of one surface to the other symbolises the transition from rich Andorra to a remote part of Spain. The mountains are breathtaking, the views stunning and different every day.

If you go in September or early October, autumn begins to fall with its beautiful colours or, in case there is some snowfall, you will be confronted with a landscape in almost black and white.

Remote Spain

Few people live here. In the village of Tirvia there is one bar, often closed.  You pass by the Chapel of Sta. Magdalena, a perfect spot for lunch. You drive on over rocky mountain tracks traversing areas where little grows. Then, suddenly, you arrive in green, cultivated valleys with meadows, cows and sheep. Several time you pass the 2,400 meter mark. Whatever the time of year, you enjoy the fresh mountain are and the silence of nature.

We have included a few extras in the roadbook for this individual trip, such as a detour past the chapel of Montgarri. An easy drive along a stream taking you to the magnificently situated chapel.

Practical information

The trip has been designed so that you can do it in seven days at a relaxed pace, assuming you drive every day. The first leg is from Andorra to Alins. The second takes you to Rialp, from where we have two round trips. From Rialp you go to Espot, then to Vielha and on the seventh day to Bossost.

No special preparation of you vehicle is necessary. Just make sure it’s in good overall condition and that you have all-terrain tyres with plenty of tread left.

The journey is approximately 500 km long, of which about 75% is on tracks. These are not difficult or technically challenging, though they are interesting enough as a driving experience. A 4×4 with good ground clearance makes life easier, as does a low range gear box. These are not strictly necessary: we have had clients in a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk and a Landrover Freelander 2 who completed the tour with careful driving without problems. Great fun guaranteed.

Here is an overview of the route:

When to go

You can do this trip at any time between late May/early July and early October. At the end of May there will still be snow in the mountains which, if winter has been severe, could block your path. In October the first snow may fall, which makes for beautiful scenery.

Included

The price for this offer is from €1050 for two people, which includes:

  • Eight overnight stays for two people in comfortable hotels, including breakfast
  • E-roadbook containing a complete seven-day tour description and point-to-point navigation
  • Points of interest with pictures
  • Detailed map in your roadbook
  • Restaurants and hotels on the map
  • Detours and alternative routes
  • Suggestions for experiments: the roadbook invites you to try something out.

Not included

  • Any other meals
  • Fuel
  • Insurance

More information or booking

If you want to know more about this journey, you can always contact us. You can start booking this journey by sending an email to info@4x4discoverytravel.com with your wishes and your telephone number. We will then contact you to make sure everyting will be okay so that we can finish your booking.

13 days fascinating Kyrgyzstan in September

Kyrgyzstan: mountains, lakes and friendly people

Kyrgyzstan is for lovers of the outdoors. As 90% of the country is higher than 1500 meters, it is especially attractive for people who love mountains. Read in-depth in Bradt’s travel guide on Kyrgyzstan.

From Bishkek into the mountains

You land in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital, a textbook example of Soviet urban planning, where you will stay in a comfortable 4-star hotel. On the day of your arrival we will do a brief tour of the city to give you your first taste of Kyrgyzstan.

Into the mountains

The next day, after a good night’s sleep and an excellent breakfast, you will get the keys for your 4×4. You’re here for Kyrgyzstan’s nature, so we leave soon heading West to the Toktogul water reservoir on an amazing road over the Tue Ashuu pass at an altitude of 3000 meters. We literally start on a high. Over the following days you will have the chance to dip your toe in lake Son Kul, altitude 3013 meters, drive along the Silk Road, altitude 3200 meters, and, to top it all, drive over the Tosor pass at 3950 meters.

Where there are mountains, there are gorges. You will see them from above and drive through them, at one time seemingly even through two simultaneously. This is where Semenovskoye and Grigorievskoye gorges meet: you drive into the one and out of the other.

Tash Rabat Caravanserai

In the heart of the Tian Shan mountains the Tash Rabat Caravanserai has been built into a mountainside, one of the most interesting sites in Central Asia. It contradicts the idea that Kyrgyzstan has only mountains and lakes to offer. It’s a 15th century stone building with 31 rooms where travellers and merchants could shelter on one of the roughest sections of the Silk Road. Its location is far away from anything resembling civilisation, both then and now. It’s probably the most authentic feeling you can get of the Silk Road.

Horse riding and eagle hunting

Kyrgyzstan has a great horse riding tradition. To see the country from the back of a horse is a special experience. We offer you the opportunity to do it yourself for a whole morning, feel like a nomad, meet the locals and be one with your surroundings.

The tradition of hunting with eagles goes back to the 12th century when the Mongols invaded the area. The art is slowly becoming extinct as fewer young people are willing to be trained, traditionally by their father, to become a skilled hunter. The need to hunt with an eagle to feed a community is not so great anymore either. Tourism is now the most important factor to maintain the tradition.

Practical information

One of the best ways to discover Kyrgyzstan, get to know its people and their way of life is by spending the evening and nights in homestays, guesthouses and yurts. We will be in a homestay once, twice in a yurt and three times in a guest house, which leaves two times in a hotel (four-star).

This is roughly the itinerary that you will follow:

Prices are per person on the basis of two people sharing a room and one comfortable 4×4 car. Included in the price are:

  • Transfers to and from airport
  • Minibus in Bishkek
  • All accommodations
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Fine dining in Bishkek on last night
  • Rent of your 4×4 car
  • Fuel
  • Entrances to all museums
  • Eagle show
  • Mineral water during the journey
  • English speaking local guide
  • English speaking tour leader
  • Support car with driver

Excluded are:

  • Your flight to and from Kyrgyzstan
  • Horse riding
  • Any other shows you may wish to attend
  • Personal expenses
  • Alcoholic drinks

Your car is a Toyota 4Runner or similar. Upgrade to a luxury car, Lexus 470 or similar, is possible at an additional cost.

You must arrange for your own travel and cancellation insurance. No visa are required for visitors from the EU.

You will get a comprehensive information package well in advance of your departure.

Trip information

The dates for this trip are as follows:

  • 1 September: your first day of the journey
We organise a tour of Bishkek in the afternoon. In order for you to start when you’re rested, we recommend you arrive in Bishkek a day early, on the 31st of August. This overnight stay is not included in the price, but we’re happy to arrange this for you.
  • 13 Septmber, departure from Bishkek in the afternoon.
We visit the bazar in the morning and assume you fly in the afternoon. If this is not possible for you, you either miss the bazar or you can fly a day later. We will gladly arrange your additional overnight stay.

The minimum number of cars for this journey is three, based on two persons per car. A maximum of four people per car is possible. We will charge €1350 for each additional person.

The maximum number of cars is seven.

Click on the link below for a day-to-day description of the journey. We regularly make some changes to the programme. The trip may therefore deviate form the example below at some points.
